From selection to final form. Watch this stock evolve from raw wood into its finished shape.
Starting with exhibition grade Turkish walnut, carefully selected from our extensive collection. This piece is restocked to bespoke measurements.

The process begins by measuring the centre line of the stock and setting out the cast, followed by shaping the butt end using files and rasps. Excess wood is then removed on
the bandsaw, preparing it for the detailed hand shaping that follows.
Carefully crafted with precision, expertly sanded for a flawless smooth finish, and now ready for its final touches. 🛠️

This DB hammer 20 bore James Purdey and Sons made in approximately 1860 is undergoing an alteration to its stock due our client’s height.

At 6 ft 5 inches, our client requires the stock to be lengthened to his measurements. Mr Rule has selected a piece of fine Turkish Walnut to match the original stock as best as possible for grain and colour.

Here he is sharpening his hand plane in preparation to hand shape the shock.

We thought it would be helpful to share some information about the difference between oil that is commercially bought against our own homemade recipe.

Our homemade red oil contains just two ingredients - Linseed oil and alkanet root, which is a herbaceous flowering plant, the roots of which are used to produce a red dye. Alkanet root has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries and is used in the modern day as a colourant for cosmetics and food colouring.

We use this oil to feed the new wood, enhancing its natural colour and beauty.

This is only one part of our finishing oil process, so it’s important to remember that there are many furthers steps to the process with our finishing best London finishing oil - that recipe will remain close to our chest!

There is one more secret ingredient to our oil - and that is Time. The amount of time our oil is brewed makes all the difference to our recipe, and we are incredibly proud to have been developing it for over 60 years.
